The extract focuses on Jane’s Story. She is the victim and has reached a point of no return and has plucked up the courage to call the Domestic Violence help line.

 

Read the extract:

 

Work in pairs: One take on the role of Jane the other the role of the person on the phone line.

 

Discuss and consider how many times Jane has tried to leave her husband

 

To deepen your understanding of Jane’s situation ‘Hot Seat’ the characters involved in Jane’s story:

How does domestic violence effect the rest of the family?

 

If you were Jane’s neighbour how would you respond to this situation?

 

Did Jane leave?  

 

Decide what decision Jane takes now discuss what the consequences are for her, the children and the husband/perpetrator?

 

In pairs explore the possibilities of doing it as a two hander (2 people)... with one person being on the other end of the phone line... What questions are being asked?

 

Discuss why the writer has chosen to use ribbon and oven gloves... what do they symbolise?

What happens at the end of the excerpt?
